SolarSense applications due soon: Learn how to apply with Minnesota Power
Applications for Minnesota Power’s SolarSense rebate, which can result in significant discounts for solar installations, are quickly coming due.
The utility is opening the application window on March 1 and will accept submissions for a couple of days. Qualified applications will be awarded in a lottery.
Minnesota Power has been hinting at some changes to their rebate program after this year, so this may be the last chance to get a rebate before SolarSense undergoes a makeover.
The rebates from Minnesota Power are one of several incentives available for solar installations. Many utilities don’t offer direct rebates for going solar, but their net metering policies reduce customers’ bills. Homeowners can take advantage of a 30% tax credit from the federal government.
SolarSense rebates are based on the expected production of the system. For every kilowatt-hour of solar energy the system is expected to produce, Minnesota Power will award 29 cents. That can result in a few thousand dollars off of a solar installation!
For instance, an 8 kW rooftop system in Duluth may produce about 10,000 kWh in a year. That would result in a SolarSense rebate of $2,900! Rebates are capped at $5,000 or 60% of project costs, whichever is less.
As a certified installer, Wolf Track Energy is able to process SolarSense applications for our customers. They require a system design and shade report to demonstrate the expected production of the system. The system must be installed within six months of being awarded the rebate.
