Solar battery rebate program in Minnesota: How to apply
Worried about power outages but turned off by the price of a backup energy system? Minnesota’s solar battery rebate program may be a perfect fit for you.
The new program allows customers to claim up to $7,000 for installing batteries with their grid-tied solar system. The state Legislature approved the program in 2023 as a way to reduce costs for homeowners and businesses installing energy storage systems.
The process for applying for the solar battery incentive depends on who provides your power. Xcel Energy customers may get up to $175 per kWh installed, and they will apply through the utility company. Everyone else will go through the state of Minnesota, and they’re eligible for up to $250 per kWh.
To be eligible for the rebate, the battery system must be limited to 50 kWh, and it must be connected to a grid-tied solar system. The battery system must have been installed on or after Aug. 1, 2024.
Applicants are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. As of Feb. 11, 2025, there was almost $1.8 million left in the state’s program. The program is scheduled to sunset in 2027 or the funds are exhausted, whichever comes first.
Through the application process, the state will verify that the battery system was installed and the interconnection was completed with the local utility. The state will only disburse the funds once the applicant or installer provides proof that the project is completed.
Customers who decide to only installer solar at their property will still reap the benefits of lower power bills. But when the power goes out, the solar panels will turn off. Solar battery systems allow customers to store some energy onsite in case of an emergency, allowing them to keep critical appliances running.
